And I say to you...HOLY CRAP

Uhhhhhhhhh...what a terrible weekend. It is amazing how much two days can suck.

On Saturday we went to a wedding. The wedding itself was beautiful, but the reception was at Panos Charhouse. Yuck! Yuck! The food there is.....not the best. But at least we were spared from eating most of it. We were seated at the last table in the reception hall, so by the time we got up to the buffet, it was mostly empty. And there are apparently no refills at Panos's. So, we ate mashed potatoes and buttered noodles. But I think it may have been a blessing. The creamed chicken and beef tips looked a little...abused, if you know what I mean.

Sunday started out well. Eric and I went to Barthel's Fruit Farm and picked apples and plums. This was to be the first of two trips to the orchard this year. We were working towards the ultimate goal of homemade apple butter, which calls for quarts and quarts of homemade applesauce. We started out strong. We picked our apples, found a food mill, and we were on our way to our first finished batch of applesauce when tragedy struck. I was scooping cooked apples into the food mill, which was being operated by Eric, when I accidentally hit his knuckles with a spoon full of hot, hot, hot! apples. He jerked back, as anyone would who had just been burned, and the mill full of apples splashed onto his left hand.

It was pretty bad after that. We ended up going to urgent care and Eric came out with his left hand completely wrapped and his right hand mostly wrapped up. I was so guilty and freaked out, I felt terrible. It is amazing how much a little inattention can cost you. At the urgent care they were talking about scarring and physical therapy, and how he might lose some movement in his left hand. By the time the vist was over I was a total mess. Especially because of the fear of the loss of movement. If Eric couldn't play his guitar, he would be devastated.

But the next day Eric went to his doctor and it wasn't nearly as bad as all his bandages indicated. He finally emerged with only one small bandage on his right hand a three small bandages on his left hand. The worst is a blister the size of a nickel on his left pinky and a small spot on his left thumb that blistered and burst almost immediately. The burns won't scar or impede hand movement in any way, and in two or three days he will be able to cover them up with regular bandaids. His pain has reduced dramatically, too. He doesn't even need to take Advil anymore. The doctor even released him to play volleyball next Monday, so he is well on his way to recovery.

But I still feel like shit! And I am not sure if we will continue with the applesauce making....

Holy crap is right! It isn't your fault, but I understand why you feel shitty. The dude will be fine and be slappin' things around in no time ;-)

F-ing doctors. They always tell you the worst part of stuff by default and get you all worked up for no reason. You know when I went in for a consult for my wisdom teeth removal, they told me I might die. Fuck that. I still haven't gotten them out.

Not that I can relate, but when I was 9 I spilled hot coffee on my wrist and got 2nd degree burns. I got a huge blister about the size of a watermelon and when it popped it was cool.

Also, you can't give in to the apples! You must defeat them and the only way to show that they haven't won is to pound their smug fleshyness into a tasty mush.

Some doctors have a way with making you freak out. A nurse or doctor this summer had me believing that if I would have waited to take Ethan in 30 more seconds, he would of had to have his finger removed (in reference to the pinched finger). The guilt over that was pretty bad since I had wanted to wait another 15 hours or so to take him! Glad Eric is going to be okay!

Thanks, guys. That makes me feel better.

Brian - I needed that encouragement. You are right, I won't let those stupid apples get the best of me! I will beat them, and then I will bring you guys some of the bounty. We even made plum jam...which pretty much tastes like sugar.

You know...they boys love Apples in all of their forms. But especially in sauced form. But I bet butter form is equally delicious.

It's an adventurous culinary experiment. I hope you can get back on the horse and achieve butter status. I'd like to know how it turns out.
